Since joining the VA in 2006, Valerie has served as an anesthesiologist and intensivist, including as a tele-intensivist. From 2010 to 2017, she led the VA’s Tele-ICU efforts, helping establish its first inpatient telemedicine program, and founded the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Tele-ICU Committee.
From 2018 to 2023, she was VISN CHIO for VA VISN 22, overseeing eight medical centers across Arizona, New Mexico, and Southern California. Her work included standardising PACS systems, expanding tele-urology and tele-eye services, and launching a Tele-Emergency Care model that is now a national standard. She also helped rapidly scale the VA’s Tele-Critical Care program to 51 medical centers.
At FEHRM, she has led initiatives to align VA and DoD imaging systems, data sharing, and cross-agency collaboration, including referral processes, training, and access. Across her leadership roles, she has been recognised for building high-performing informatics communities.
Valerie is board certified in Informatics, Anesthesia, and Critical Care Medicine. She holds an MD from Loma Linda University, an MBA and MS in Information Systems Management from Auburn University, and BS degrees in Biology and Chemistry from St. Louis University.
